While Chinese culture traditionally frowned upon sex after menopause, many retirees now see it as the key to a happy and healthy old age.
A 2018 report by Renmin University found that 53% of Chinese people aged between 55 and 61 had sex at least once a month. As income and comfort levels are rising, elderly people are looking more for emotional satisfactions such as love, caring and sex.
The market for senior sex therapies is strongly increasing while sex shops see more and more elderly coming in. There is also a flourishing market for meetups and matchmaking events of single seniors (widows, widowers, divorcees) to find new partners for companionship and love.
Quietly, millions of retirees in China are joining the silver sexual revolution. Though 85% of young Chinese believe their parents never have sex, according to a recent survey, the truth seems to be quite different.
