COMAC’s first large passenger plane model C919 to be delivered for commercial use successfully completed its maiden test flight last weekend, expected to be delivered to China Eastern Airlines later this year as part of a first order of five planes signed last year.
COMAC or Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (中国商用飞机有限责任公司) is a Chinese state-owned aerospace manufacturer established on 11 May 2008 in Shanghai.
The Comac C919 is their first large passenger aircraft model developed and launched, a narrow body airliner expecting to compete in the medium-range, less-than-200-seat single-aisle segment, such as some variants of the Airbus’ A320 family and Boeing’s 737 MAX.

The C919 has between 158 and 168 seats, a standard range of 4,075 kilometers and a maximum range of 5,555 kilometers.
The COMAC model numbering will have a sequence of C9X9 with C standing for Comac or China and the two 9’s resemble a homophonic pun in China for ‘forever’. The X will fill in the model sequence number.

To date, COMAC has received 815 orders for the C919 from 28 customers worldwide.
COMAC is already manufacturing and selling the regional jet (fewer than 100 seats) ARJ21 Xiangfeng since 2016 with 78-90 seats of which 66 have been sold by the end of 2021.
