Skis made from pinewood and furry horsehide have been a mode of transportation in the Altay region of North-West Xinjiang (bordering Russia and Kazakhstan) since ancient times.
Altay is believed to be one of the places where skiing originated. An ancient rock paint found shows people hunting with fur skis dates back about 10,000 years.
Traditional ski festivals, competitions and tours have been organised in recent years to preserve the ancient heritage of these unique cross-country skiing techniques with fur skis.
