National Botanical Gardens China 2022


Second national botanical garden opened this year last Monday (July 11) in Guangzhou after the Beijing national botanical garden opened its doors last April.


The new South China National Botanical Garden in Guangzhou is the largest subtropical garden in the world with more than 17,000 plant species from among others tropical forests, deserts and alpine meadows including 643 species of rare and endangered plants and 337 species of national protected wild plants. The new garden is rebuilt on the site of the old botanical garden, opened in 1929.


At an area of 319 hectares with 38 dedicated gardens, there are also three research and laboratory centers, two field research bases and a museum of of rare plant specimens under the supervision of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.







The upgraded China national botanical garden in Beijing, opened last April, covers an area of 600 hectares with more than 30,000 kinds of plants and 5 million representative plant specimens from five continents including field research bases and research laboratory centers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.





China announced a new system of national botanical gardens for conservation, protection and research last year at the COP15 in Kunming, Yunnan province, the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (October 2021).
