Women Rule and Men submit in China’s newest TV show. The Romance of Tiger and Rose (传闻中的陈芊芊) is a gender-reversing drama taking a place in the fictional city of Huayuan where women rule society and men take care of the home. Many traditions and customs are reversed, especially for the women’s and men’s traditional duties and expectations in life such as women ruling and going to war while men stay at home, taking care for the preferred daughter carrying on the family name.

The TV show has received over 600 million views since the launch by Tencent Video at the end of May with a hype on Chinese social media. The related hashtag 传闻中的陈芊芊 on Weibo (China's twitter) has been viewed over 3 billion times.

Many fans appreciate the show’s biting satire with many of the lines spoken by men could easily come from real-life sentiments Chinese women might encounter today.

However, not everyone is impressed with the way the show has unfolded. Some people mention on social media that even though the roles are reversed, ladies in the show do not really break free from the stereotypically submissive role, e.g. relying on men to sort out the real troubles.
