Wuhan's delicious superfood
Lotus root spring harvest | Hubei province with capital Wuhan is renowned in China and beyond for lotus root farming. The spring harvest this year has been a tragedy due to the lockdown in many Hubei counties. Many crops have rotten, there has been too little time for the harvesting and domestic and international logistics has limited the distribution of the roots in China and other Asian countries.
Lotus root can be harvested several times with spring and autumn being the peaks in the season. Let’s hope that the farmers can make up some losses coming autumn.
Lotus root is also a basic ingredient for many dishes in the Hubei cuisine with pork ribs and lotus root soup being one of the famous delicacies. The root is commonly used in soups, stir-fried, deep-fried dishes, salads and naturally hotpot.
Lotus root can be considered a superfood with many healthy benefits and considerable amounts of vitamins and minerals, and a good source of protein and dietary fiber.
The root is as well used in TCM since ancient times for various functions, especially as ingredient in stop bleeding herbal remedies.
